Dear All,

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. L. Dale Van Vleck, a
pioneering figure in animal breeding and genetics, on December 23, 2025.
During my undergraduate studies, Dr. Van Vleck's textbook Genetics for the
Animal Sciences served as my primary introduction to the principles of
animal breeding. Its exceptional clarity and engaging presentation made
complex topics accessible to bachelor's-level students, and my classmates
and I developed a strong interest in animal breeding based on his
captivating writings.

Last year, as a visiting scholar in the Department of Animal Science at the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln, I had the privilege of collaborating with
Dr. Matt Spangler and Dr. Jessica Petersen. During that time, I saw some of
Dr. Van Vleck's original handwritten manuscripts, which revealed the
extraordinary effort he invested despite the limited resources available
in his era to simplify formulas and scientific terminology, rendering
advanced concepts widely comprehensible. His lifelong dedication to
producing these seminal works has profoundly enriched the global animal
science community.

Dr. Van Vleck's remarkable legacy will endure through his groundbreaking
contributions and the numerous scholars he mentored.

Please accept my sincere condolences. His memory will be forever honored.

Mohammad Bagher Zandi B.M.
University of Zanjan, Zanjan, Iran
